I t was almost mid-morning at the base in Bonton. Don was hunched over his PC on the trailer’s dinette table, looking at the new history program that Ivan’s team just delivered. “Hey, honey, you’ve got to check this out. It’s genius.”
“I’ll be right there,” she said. “Almost dressed.”
Don searched the report for the last couple days. “Bingo!”
“What?” Sydney asked as she walked to the dinette.
“About two thousand enemy hits disappeared day before yesterday from Brownwood. Another thousand disappeared from Comanche early yesterday.”
Sydney sat down next to Don on the dinette seat. “They disappeared when they got into the shielded vehicles?”
“Yep,” Don said. “This report shows where they disappeared and where they reappeared. Hell, the payload data from the chips is available too.”
“Wow. Anything like that happen since? Are any chips missing right now?”
“Still looking,” Don said. “This is gonna be a game changer.”
There was a knock at the door. “I’ll get it,” Sydney said. She opened the door. Jason and Eric were standing out there, and she invited them in.
“Got your text,” Jason said. “Sounds like a good deal.”
“Big time,” Don said. “I can see exactly where those three thousand enemy fighters loaded into their shielded vehicles yesterday, and where they were exposed again. I’m scanning now to see if any more have disappeared near us.”
“What are you seeing so far?” Eric asked.
“Over the past couple days around Dallas, I’m seeing small numbers disappear and then reappear.”
“How small?” Jason asked.
“We’re talking van sized numbers. Eight to sixteen at a time.”
“Probably those creeps who’ve been attacking field hospitals,” Eric said. “Can’t wait to nail those guys.”
“Whoa,” Don said. “I think we’re gonna have company.”
“Oh, shit, what are you seeing?” Sydney asked.
“Owenwood. About five hundred just disappeared. That’s where the largest group has been hanging out, east of the Cotton Bowl stadium.”
“Dammit,” Jason said, whipping out his cellphone.
“There’s another two hundred,” Don said. “Son of a bitch.”
Jason looked up from his phone screen. “We’re talking less than fifteen minutes away. Let’s get the word out.”
“There’s another three hundred now,” Don said. “Go get ready. I’ll use text messages to keep you guys updated.”
Jason sent a broadcast text, then turned to leave. He paused at the door. “Thanks, man, you probably just saved our butts.”
Don nodded. “The only way in here is 2nd Street. They’ll use Elsie Faye Heggins Street to get there. I’d get the tanks pointed in that direction.”
“Yep, exactly what I was thinking,” Jason said as he left the coach with Eric.
“They’ll try to keep us from getting into the Dallas battle over and over, I suspect,” Sydney said.
“Yeah, but we’ll see them coming, and we still have air support. Send a text to Wallis. Tell him what’s going on, and see if we can have the drones watching the route between here and Owenwood.”
“On it,” she said, typing on her phone.
Chloe and Alyssa rushed in the open door. “You heard what’s going on?”
“We warned them,” Don said. “Send a text out to the recruits. Warn them, especially the ones who are on the road between here and Owenwood.
